Conservation Through Community in the Mathews Range

Protecting forests, wildlife, and livelihoods through locally led conservation.

Why This Place Matters

Originally established and funded under the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), subsequent loss of USAID funding threatened to undermine the financial security and structure of Ngilai Conservancy. However, due to the cooperation and concerted efforts of conservation partners, private donors, Saruni Basecamp Foundation, and Kitich Forest Camp with Ngilai’s Samburu people, the conservancy has taken responsibility for its own operations and the future of its ecosystems.

Despite the massive scale of this undertaking, Ngilai’s continued success is a testament to the power of conservation through community.
